  • Kings Cup Regatta - serious sailing !
The first Phuket Kings Cup Regatta was held in 1987 to celebrate the 60th birthday of His Majesty the King of Thailand. Since then it has become Asia’s premier sailing and yachting race event, held every year in the first week of December to commemorate His Majesty’s birthday on 5 December. Read more about the Kings Cup Regatta.
  • Ayutthaya: For an interesting trip outside of Bangkok, head to Ayutthaya, about an hour's drive from Bangkok (hire a car and chauffeur in Bangkok for the day to get there). Ayutthaya was the ancient capital of the Siamese kingdom until the Burmese invaded, plundered and destroyed the city; today you will find breathtaking ruins of temples built in the 13th and 14th centuries.
  • River Kwai, Kanchanaburi: If in Kanchanaburi, head to the Brew House (Soi India Thamakham, Maenam Kwae Road. Tel.: 01-4451578), located about 400 metres from the River Kwai bridge (Tamakan side) on the left-hand side of the main road. This outside restaurant and bar serves great local cuisine and some of the cheapest beer in town - about THB55 for a large Singha ! The owner Wallop (Jack) Thanamai spent two years at college in Bournemouth UK during the 1970s - check out the 'photo behind the bar of Jack's hairstyle when he came back from England !
